Trevor Kigoonya | Faces of Midland

10/26/21

You Are Not Alone

“You are not alone” is a reminder that Trevor Kigoonya carries with him as he continues his path as a student and an athlete at Midland University. Whether on the field, in the classroom, or around campus, Trevor knows the importance of finding that support system.

Born in Los Angeles, Trevor transferred to Midland from West Los Angeles College. Growing up, Trevor found his love for football as a sophomore in high school, which has carried over into his time in college. Midland appealed to Trevor for its football program and its nursing program.

“I mostly came here for athletics and to further my medical education since Midland has a good nursing program.”

In addition to football, Trevor is also a member of the Black Student Union’s council. Taking on a leadership position in an organization that he is deeply invested in has been a rewarding experience for him.

“One of the greatest accomplishments I’m proud of during my time at Midland is being one of the council members of BSU.”

Trevor wanted to find opportunities to branch out and find adventure away from his home in Los Angeles as a college student. It’s about not letting past failure keep you from recognizing your talents. Since settling at Midland, Trevor has found that sense of adventure by embracing the Warrior spirit.

“Being a Warrior means to dare to take a chance on yourself and challenge yourself to accomplish something great for you, no matter how many times you fail.”

Trevor says one of the most significant obstacles one can face as a college student is finding the right balance between academics and athletics. As both are important parts of the college experience, his advice to freshmen is not to lose sight of what is important.

“Know the rules, know what is at stake, know your disadvantages, fight for what you do, and do not give up.”

Trevor Kigoonya is a senior nursing major from Los Angeles, CA. To share your story or nominate a friend, email social@midlandu.edu or post using #FacesofMidland.
