Teaching, Coaching the Perfect Career Path
His love for literature and football has pushed Tevin Curry to be a teacher and a coach.
A Secondary Education major from Papillion, Nebraska, the Midland University senior is excited to embark on a career where he will influence students both in the classroom and on the field.
“When I was growing up, I had teachers and coaches that made a strong impression on me. They took me under their wing and made sure I succeeded. I always knew I wanted to teach.”
After finishing his practicum at Omaha Westview High School this fall, Tevin will begin student teaching at Omaha North High School in the spring.
After spending his first year at Peru State College, Tevin’s journey took a detour when he decided to transfer to Midland. “I had some friends who attended Midland and spoke highly of the education department. I was also lucky that a former high school football coach was on the Midland staff and put in a good word for me.”
Although injuries cut short his football career after two years, the lessons he learned along the way will remain with him for a lifetime. “I really felt like football helped me become a man and taught me life lessons. I want to be able to pay that forward to kids in the future.”
Tevin’s passion for writing began at a young age when his mother encouraged him to keep a journal, something he has maintained since. “It’s always been a way for me to write down my thoughts and feelings. If I’m stressed, it’s a place I can turn to. I’ve been doing this since elementary school, so there are a lot of random notebooks sitting around.”
That love for writing has been fueled since his arrival at Midland. He began taking creative writing courses with Dr. Henry Krusiewicz, has had entries published in Bits of Flint, and is also a member of Sigma Tau Delta, an international English honor society. “I’ve always had a passion for literature and love reading and writing.”
He shares that love with others by working in the Writing Lab on campus. He has also spent the past three semesters working at the Service Desk in the library.
As he prepares for his own teaching journey in 2025, he is thankful for the way Midland has prepared him to be a future leader. “Midland has been a good fit for me, and I’ve developed good relationships with professors through having smaller class sizes. It’s weird to think I’ll have my own class in a year, but I’m excited to see where I end up.”
