Get Outside Your Comfort Zone
As she worked to further her education, Sidney Hirsch was fortunate to have a professor who influenced her to begin a career in higher education.
“When I was getting my Masters at the University of Kansas, Dr. Mary Fry was my sports psychology professor. The way she taught, motivated and encouraged her students was something I hoped to do someday. She encouraged me to do so many things outside of my comfort zone, which allowed me to have great success. She made me feel like I could do anything I put my mind to.”
Sidney began working at Midland University in the summer of 2019 and currently serves as the Assistant Athletic Director for Student Development/Warrior Skills. Her love of working in higher education stems from those who surround her. “I love the people I get to work with, both my co-workers and the students. I am so thankful to have a job I enjoy being at every single day. The people at Midland definitely make it something special.”
As Sidney discovered the value of branching out in college, she encourages Midland students to extend their own boundaries. “I want students to get outside of their comfort zone. Try new things and get involved. There are so many things to do at Midland, and it’s worth giving different things a try.”
An accomplished runner at both the high school and collegiate level, it’s a safe bet you’ll probably find Sidney logging some miles before or after work, or maybe both. She also gets plenty of exercise by going biking with her dad. When not running on two feet, or riding on two wheels, Sidney loves traveling. “I enjoy finding the local coffee shops and collecting the coffee cup sleeves to remember all the places I’ve been. I have so many places I still want to visit!”
While she can’t envision herself working anywhere but in higher education, Sidney could see herself surrounded by some four-legged friends. “Maybe I’ll open a cat cafe someday as a side gig.”
