Kobie Jay | Faces of Midland

The Perfect Fit |

Kobie Jay, a junior Criminal Justice major from Coconut Creek, Florida, found her perfect fit at Midland University after receiving an offer to play flag football

Growing up, Kobie said she moved around a lot, but athletics always played a massive role in her life. When it came time to look for a college that best suited her, the cost of school was high on her priority list.

After receiving an offer from Midland to play flag football, Kobie said she had to explore the unique opportunity and ended up committing to Midland during her visit, believing Midland was a place she was meant to be. ”I did not know what I truly felt I wanted or needed in a school so coming on visits and getting to see where I felt I fit best made a big difference for me.”

One thing that drew her to Midland was her appreciation for the small-town lifestyle and the perks of attending a smaller university. ”Going through such an influential time in life, with such a strong community, has made life much more manageable than what I would have experienced being a small fish in a big pond back at home.”

Along with being a part of the women’s flag football team, Kobie also serves as a work study for Institutional Advancement and is a member of Pi Gamma Mu.

She chose Criminal Justice because it sounded like an interesting career path. From interning at the federal courthouse to working on campus, she credits Midland’s close-knit community and supportive faculty for shaping both her personal and professional growth.

”I ended up falling in love with it through opportunities like my internship with the District of Nebraska’s Probation and Pretrial Services office at the federal courthouse in Lincoln, as well as my current employment with CareCorps’ Lifehouse, the homeless shelter in Fremont.”

Kobie said Midland has helped her become a well-rounded person in and out of the classroom. ”Whether it is interacting with high-profile donors, going to class, meetings, or practice, or simply just hanging out with friends, Midland has shaped the person I am today and I couldn’t be more proud.”

Her professors have also helped her throughout her journey.  She said Dr. Cassie Torres (Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice) has been a mentor to her throughout her time at Midland. At the same time, Kobie has also been able to learn from the staff in Institutional Advancement.

”People like Emma Oborny (Business Development & Events Specialist) and Anna O’Reilly (Annual Giving Officer) and the rest of the advancement team have been there for me in ways beyond just simply me being there as a work study.”

After graduation, Kobie plans on achieving her masters degree at Midland, although she is keeping the door open for other possibilities that may come her way.
