Jonah Martinez | Faces of Midland

Choosing the Right Career |

Jonah Martinez has discovered his passion for chiropractic care during his time at Midland University.

Thanks to the support of professors and a tight-knit campus community, the senior Exercise Science major from Edinburgh, Texas, began to see a future in the field of chiropractic. A little advice from former professor Jef Field helped steer him in that direction. “He kind of pointed me into all the different career paths, and he told me about chiropractic, which I already had a huge interest in, and that kind of solidified it.”

His opportunity to attend Midland was boosted by his dad, who filled out a questionnaire that was sent out by the track and field coach without Jonah knowing. A few weeks later, he received a call from the coach asking if he would be interested in learning more about Midland.

After talking with an admissions advisor about possible majors, Jonah chose Exercise Science. His admissions counselor said a lot of athletes like to go into a science field to stay in the athletic realm. “I kind of lucked out because being a chiropractor fell within that major, and I figured I could make a career in that.”

Jonah appreciates Midland’s community aspect and likes that you know almost everyone on campus. “I’m able to ask anyone for help if I need help, and if they need help, they can ask me. That’s probably my favorite thing, the community and how small it is.”

He has also been grateful for the assistance he has received from the Academic Resource Center and Career Studio during his time at Midland. “I personally have a couple of friends in the Learning Lab, so they’ve been able to help me with anything I have. The career studio has been a big help for me with my resume, which I have used to apply for jobs.”

Along with being a track and field team member, competing in the high jump and javelin, Jonah has stayed busy with a pair of internships over the past year, first at Saunders County Chiropractic & Acupuncture, and most recently at Duncan Chiropractic. “I’ve actually done an internship with one of my professors, Dr. Keith Chvatal (Human Performance). I asked him as much as I possibly could because of how much he knows about the subject.”

After graduation, Jonah plans on attending graduate school in Dallas, Texas, his next step toward a career as a chiropractor.
