Demetria Carman | Faces of Midland

It’s Never Too Late

Growing up in Sioux City, IA – Demetria was very active in her high school activities, but upon graduation she made the choice to put college on the back burner, get married and have children. Her 3 daughters Cami, Madi and Avery are Demetria’s whole world today.

“I love to spend time with my daughters! A favorite weekend pastime is going out to listen to Omaha’s great live music offerings. I knew that I wanted to create a better life for myself and my family, as well as be a role model to my amazing 3 daughters – so I decided to go back to school in my forties.”

After spending the last 12+ years working in some of Omaha’s most major hospitals, Demetria was no stranger to the medical industry. But, this made for a tough transition to the business world.

“I worked as a Surgical Technologist for 7 years in Sioux City and then 5 years at Lakeside Ambulatory Surgery Center in Omaha, NE. Now, I currently work as the Scheduling Coordinator for the ICU units at Children’s Hospital where I connect with the Nursing Administration and the Unit Managers to make sure that we have the proper mix of staff working each shift.”

Once 2 of her 3 daughters were grown, Demetria decided it was time to go back and earn her degree. So naturally, the family made it a competition on who would finish college first – the mom or the daughters. In 2018, Demetria began the journey to earn her Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration where she graduated in May of 2021 at the age of 46.

“I lost the bachelor’s war, but I will win the master’s round. Currently, I’m on the verge of successfully finishing my Master’s of Business Administration with a concentration in Project Management from Midland University CGPS. Even today, I know that my story is still just beginning and Midland has taught me that I’m capable of far more than I ever imagined.”

As Demetria rounds the corner to win the family race of completing her master’s, she keeps in mind all that she has accomplished so far.

“It’s never too late to change your life. And it’s never too late to chase your dreams. My 3 girls are my why. All 3 of them are my biggest cheerleaders”

Demetria Carman is a current Master of Business Administration student from Sioux City, IA. To share your story or nominate a friend, email cgps@midlandu.edu.
