Brynn Tosh | Faces of Midland

01/28/25

Being part of a team helped make for a smooth transition for Brynn Tosh when she arrived from Canada to Midland University. |

The junior from Souris, Manitoba, has been a three-year member of the Midland women’s hockey team. Having instant teammates and friends provided a big lift when she arrived for her freshman year.

“I’m very close to my family, so it was tough moving away from home. Being part of a team made the transition easy because it gave me a group of friends right away. I came here with my best friend (teammate Taylor Bell) and we have lived together for the past three years, and that has also been a big help.”

Hockey was Brynn’s connection to Midland. Two of her friends from home had been a part of the Midland women’s hockey team and gave Brynn good recommendations to give Midland an opportunity. “They had good things to say about the program, so I contacted Coach (Jason) White and came here for a visit. I really liked the smaller classroom sizes and one of my former teammates was an education major and spoke very highly of the education program and the professors.”

An Elementary Education major, Brynn envisioned herself as a teacher while still in high school. She has spent time working in daycares, kids camps, and as a teacher’s aide in schools. “I think those experiences helped me decide to become a teacher. I like working with younger kids, and could see myself working with students anywhere from preschool to fourth grade.”

She has gained even more classroom experience during her time at Midland, something she said has reinforced her passion for teaching. “One of the best things about being an education major is that you get into the classrooms your first semester. Getting to see teachers in action and sharing those experiences has helped me so much.

“I’m also very fortunate to have professors who have been very supportive and positive. I’ve never walked into a classroom feeling stressed because I know they are there to help me.”

She has also felt that same support as a member of the women’s hockey team. In addition to being one of the best programs in the nation, they are a very close group that supports each other on and off the ice.

“We are a very tight group, and I think that’s one of the main reasons we have success on the ice. Coach White not only wants us to be good players, he wants us to be good people and do the right things. Everyone has the same goals, so we all work together to get it done.”
