The Midland Criminal Justice Major is designed to prepare students for a variety of different professional careers in criminal justice. At Midland, we recognize the importance of applying a liberal arts education. With its holistic approach and emphasis on problem-solving and communication skills, students are prepared for entry-level positions in criminal justice agencies like probation and parole, corrections, juvenile diversion, and law enforcement. Midland’s Criminal Justice Major will give you the tools for continuing personal and professional growth to face new challenges and take advantage of new opportunities in your field of interest.
As a Midland Criminal Justice student, you will understand the nature, origins, and impact of criminal behavior in American society. Criminal Justice professors will also work closely with you to ensure you are prepared to succeed in professional work roles in criminal justice agencies, graduate programs, and professional schools.
A Midland Criminal Justice major:
- Describes key concepts, principles, and applications to the history, structure, function, and interconnectedness of the three pillars – policing, courts, and corrections – of the criminal justice system.
- Demonstrates understanding of the role of ethics and diversity within the criminal justice system.
- Applies the scientific method to the criminal justice system: integrates previous empirical literature, designs, conducts, and interprets field-related research.
- Demonstrates understanding and applies core perspectives in criminological theory to explain the nature of crime.
- Is a competitive candidate for a criminal justice position and/or admission to graduate/professional school.
- Demonstrates effective writing, presentation, and communication skills for different purposes.
